The growing appreciation for fine, authentic wines has brought renewed attention to South Africa’s Heritage Vineyards — vineyards officially recognised as being more than 35 years old. South Africa is believed to have an exceptional concentration of these precious old vines, and dedicated growers are working to restore and nurture historic blocks back into production.

Rather than blending the fruit into the broader vintage, these exceptional grapes can be given the opportunity to stand alone — producing block-specific wines that express the character of a particular grape variety, vineyard and terroir. The certified age of the vines is proudly displayed on the bottle neck.

And there is something particularly special about these old vines. Many are dry-farmed, unirrigated bush vines, their roots driven deep into the ancient earth in search of water and minerals. Their naturally low yields can produce fruit of remarkable concentration, complexity and depth. These are wines of minimal intervention — wines shaped less by manipulation and more by nature. Low rainfall and long, sun-filled summer days are tempered by cool Atlantic winds and nighttime sea mists. • Remarkable dry-land viticulture: Approximately 86% of Darling’s vineyards are dry-land and unirrigated — an extraordinary characteristic that sets the region apart.
• Deep-rooted vines: Without regular irrigation, vines are forced to search deep into the earth for moisture and nutrients, contributing to naturally balanced growth and concentrated fruit.
• Naturally low yields: Darling’s conditions encourage smaller bunches and berries, creating wines with intensity, structure and depth.
• Atlantic influence: The icy Atlantic evening breeze cools the vineyards after hot summer days, extending the ripening period and enhancing the grapes’ natural varietal character.
• Extraordinary diversity: With over 30 grape varieties planted across Darling, the region offers an exceptional palette of styles and expressions. Many of these vineyards are owned or sourced by wineries from outside the region — a testament to the quality and potential of Darling’s fruit.
